Creation Care

Creation Care - Man’s Dominion, Fallen Care, and Restoration Care of God’s Creation

Genesis 1: 26 - 28
Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

Man has dominion over creation. Many people would like to think that this means that man can do with creation as he desires. They would like to believe that it can be exploited or destroyed, all at the whim of mankind. But this is not at all the intent behind this dominion given to man.

Everything has its proper place. Mankind tends to get this wrong on both sides of the aisle. Either they think or believe that creation is somehow equal to man and raise it up above man, or they believe that they have the right to do whatever they want with creation because they are ruling over it. Both of these assumptions are very wrong. The people that believe that plants and/or animals are on the same level as humanity have a misunderstanding of the created order. We see here in Genesis that man was in fact placed and created higher than plants or animals. Then those on the other side of the side miss the point as well. God placed everything in an order. Plants and animals are lower creation. Man is a higher creation. Then God reigns above all. Just because man has dominion does not mean that they can exploit nature. They are not the owners of it, just stewards.

What does dominion mean? We must be clear in understanding that this is not in any way a kind of exploitation of nature, it is a caring guarding of nature. We see an example of this kind of stewardship in Matthew 25: 14 - 30, when Jesus tells the parable of the talents, where a man gives his servants talents while he is gone on a journey. He leaves them as stewards of his talents, which he receives back later. They are his, and never his servants. They were only left in charge of them to very carefully care for them and give them back in great and better condition. This is how God has placed us as stewards of His creation. We are to care greatly for it as we guard it.

Man has abused creation since the fall. With the fall came a false understanding of ownership by humanity. Pride was a large part of the fall, as mankind desired the ability to have the knowledge of God, being able to discern good from evil (Genesis 3). With that prideful desire came another desire of man to be like God. Man also wanted to be like God in the view of ruling over creation, but with a false sense of ownership. Sin made man prideful, which made man abuse the creation that is rightfully owned by God and was simply left to him to rule as a steward.

Creation itself was corrupted in the fall. We find out in Romans 8 that creation itself is in bondage to the corruption that was experienced in the fall. The original creation was perfect and beautiful, but now is experiencing the effects of the fall itself and is waiting to one day be restored and freed from those effects of sin.

Creation will be restored. When man is restored, so will creation. Romans 8 teaches us that creation will be restored when man is restored. Creation will be made perfect again and freed from the bonds of sin that surround it. We must view creation as God does. Just as God looks at those of us that have been redeemed and sees us as holy and restored, we must have that kind of view of creation. We must treat it as holy and restored, and do our best to ensure that it is well taken care of. Creation should cause man to worship, but not to worship the creation. Creation should cause man to worship the Creator of that creation.

This blog reminds me of the responsibilities of my dad, who is a manager at a boat company. While he is not the owner, he is expected to represent what the owner desires for his business. A manager can still be fired, just as God can take everything from us. As the manager, he should treat the employees below him with respect and kindness in order to gain the reliability of the workers and the approval of the owner. In this same sense, we cannot rely on the Earth to produce what we need to survive unless we manage in the way that would gain God's approval.

This tells me that we are lucky to be here and live on God's earth. if we do not take care of it and it's creatures we are hurting God. we cant listen to our desires, but live for what God wants us to do.

This story just shows how much God loves us humans, he trusted us with his creation. We at times abuse this love God has shown us. We are supposed to rule this world, but we are not supposed to ruin this world. God made us so we could protect it. We were put in charge because God made us more like him than the other creations. When we ruin things we show we are not worthy. We need to protect what God has given us and accept his love.

As a Christian I believe that mankind does have dominion over the earth. However, I do not think that man should abuse or destroy it. My take on God charging us with dominion is that we are masters over earth, but God says that we are made in His image. Therefore, I think this means that we are to rule over the earth as God rules over us--with love.

I really like how the author of the blog brought in the aspect of man's pride. Being the root of all sin, pride has so much to do with the creation issue being such an issue right now. Ever since the fall of man, due to pride, we have been falling in this never-ending hole of selfishness. Get, get, get. We take so much from our enviornment, wait, not ours, His inviornment. We must take a stand. Because the truth of the matter is that it's not a never ending cycle of selfishness we're in. It will end, with Christ, that is. Why not attempt for God's best until then?

This blog just reminds me in my belief is that we have the ability to destroy our planet in many different ways. But it also reminds me that we are suppose to take care of the planet since it is the means for humans existence and there are no other current means. Also if we do not take care of the planet then eventually it will stop taking care of us and that will be a giant hit against humanity. So I believe our job on this planet is to not only live our lives to the best of our ability but to also insure the future of those to proceed us and not ruin the future for those not even born.

I really like the premise of this blog. It offers a happy medium between two flawed philosophies: that the earth is ours to use and abuse at will, and that the earth should be exalted and lifted up equal to or above man. In reality, we are essentially borrowing the earth from God. This is just like anything else you might borrow from someone. While it is in your keeping, you can use it for its purpose, but you have to take care of it, since it does not belong to you. This, then, is how we should treat the earth as well. We can use it to serve our needs, but we must take care of it like God expected us to when he entrusted in into our care.

So like i get it dont kill none of them trees now. we gotsta keep em living and breathing. But Jesus set an example to kill trees when He withered the fig tree. So do i follow that lead? Or is it Him showing off Him being God? if thats the case then He can do all that He wants. So i am gonna worry about redemption right now. i think that His command to make disciples is greater than taking care of the earth right now. yea i wanna live but He holds the whole world in His hands. He is in control. i wish ethics class wasnt so loud. so guys, plz shut up in class for real. u guys r jerks to the bradinator. personal relationships r way more important than earth day or WALL-E... sry... but its true... like for riz...

I really like this: "God placed everything in an order.." God CLEARLY stated in His Word who is responsible for what: "Plants and animals are lower creation. Man is a higher creation." The next line is also crucial: "Then God reigns above all. Just because man has dominion does not man that they can exploit nature. They are not the owners of it, just stewards." God gave us the responsibility to take care of HIS creation. We did not own creation anymore than we own a house that we are housesitting for. When we fail to take care of something that God has entrusted to us, then we are failing to take care of something that belongs to the King of the Universe.
There is also the side of "worshipping created things rather than the creator". God has entrusted us with His beautiful creation to bring us to Himself, not for us to obsess over something He created.

Wow!!! Thanks for the Captain Planet chant, That was not me but I used to love that show!!!
Anyways, I think our world is a very important responsibility that God has given to us to take care of. There is a lot of waste being produced and its about time to take the initiative and do something about it. I am really talking about myself. My family is so slack with saving stuff and reusing stuff. I think its about time to make this change in life style not for "mother earth" and her happiness, but rather for God and his love and glory. All aspects of our lives can be used to glorify him and this is just a small one.

Our atheistic culture is oddly enough also a theistic culture; though it has rejected the Triune God, it has embraced Pantheism. Evolutionary writes have personified the universe with a capital U, saying things like the Universe is eternal, etc.

Consequently, we have a heresy of "Earth as divine." Groups like Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and Voluntary Human Extinction Movement (VHEMT) show how dangerous this heresy can be.

Aside from the rejection of the biblical God, the largest underlying philosophical assumption is that we can destroy the earth. I'm consistently amazed by the ignorance and naivete of such comments as the above which state that the earth can be destroyed by something we do or don't do. First, God will destroy it; we won't. Second, even if every nuke went off simultaneously, the earth itself would barely notice, though we might die.

Our culture is worshiping the Earth in the "Green Religion" these days. While I agree we could all be more conscientious, the fact that our culture puts it at a moral level above homosexuality, abortion, theft, adultery, ad nauseum, is a symptom of Satan's lie being believed.

Our planet's just fine. The greatest lie going today is the myth of global warming. And under that guise, massively detrimental legislation is being passed, such as a proposed tax on cattle of $100 a head because their flatulence is a greenhouse gas, which will put the average American farmer out of business, so we'll import more beef from Mexico, which has much poorer health regulations, and we'll suffer those consequences.

I'm looking forward to the day when God releases the earth from it's groaning, and I'm counted in that phrase "all creation longs for the rebirth."

I think that God has given us a big responsibility to take care of the earth. We are lucky that
god created such an amazing world for us to live in. So we need to take care of it like he expects us to do.

This blog shows how sin truly distorts everything and God's perfect plan. Sin seems to always lead to the "extremes". The blog portrayed this very well. On one side you have the people who could care less about the environment and take it for granted. Then on the other hand you have "tree huggers" that, like the article said, worship the creation instead of the creator. God gives us the perfect balance in Genesis. We are supposed to respect all of God's creation but not worship it.

Tyler Graves said...

the main thing that i got out of this article is that we are above everything that is on this earth. the only thing that comes before us is God. i believe that God puts us in charge of these things because we need responsibility to show that we can do things for God. We also need to take care of what God made for us because it will show him that we care about him and his creations. if we love God then we will take care of what he gave us basically is what i am trying to say here.

This is Ryan Walker on tylers..
This passage says that we are here on the earth that God has created for us to rule it not to trash it. He lends us our bodies and in doing so he has a lot of trust in us. God has given us this beautiful creation and we need not to ruin it but make it better. If we ruin this creation then this shows God that we are not trust worthy of what he has granted us.

We as humans have over done our duty as being care takers of our Earth. We weremade and created in the image of God and to protect and help run over His creation. We have allowed sin to overtake our duty anad nothing is never as good as it is suppost to be now. We really need to realize that God does love us and Earth will not live unless the approval of God is at hand.

Jessica Rabon said...

We are supposed to care for and fertilize the earth with love. God created it for us to have as ourr home and we should definitly respect what he has created. It might have been his creation but He wants us to keep it going which we have been doing. We are repaying him for everything he has done for us. He loves us and tructs us with His creation and we should trust Him with everything.

This article reminds me that we have alot of responsiblities on the earth. Although God gave us dominion over the animals we must take care of them. We must also take care of the planet and organism that God has put us over. We cannot just do our own desire, but we have to do what God wants us to do. We must be kind and rely on the earth to produce and we must survive and manage in the way the World. All our actions must be under God's approval and love God.

This is Garrett Sloan:
This shows that God loves us so much he entrusted us with his creation of the earth. We should show him the love back by protecting the earth. We should not be destroying it. We are very lucky to live here and we should keep it nice for generations to come. Just as God inteded.

It's simple...God first, men second, everything else comes after that. I liked Shelby's analogy. I'd like to think that we are becoming better stewards of the earth than say...ten, fifteen years ago.

Man rules over all the earth, God put us in place to rule over the animals and wild life. Yes we should rule over these animals but we should not ignore them. I believe that as long as we take care of Earth and mother nature, they will take care of us.

God has put us here on this earth as a gift and as a place for us to live and to rule over. He did not put us here and give us the gift of life so that we may destroy what he has made. Man has completely missed the point that God is trying to set by giving us the ability to rule over the earth. And this gift that he has given us may just be a test of our trust. Because now God is able to know if we are able to have respect for him. Because if we can not respect the things that he has made FOR us to rule over, how can we respect HIM as our ruler?

Kaitlin B. said...

God gave us the earth and everything on it and trusts us with it. His job is to look over humans and our job is to look over His creation. Yes, he gave us resources to live off of, but there is a stopping point to our consumption. The question is have we already passed that. Mankind uses enough of the things that God has given us in one day to last us a week or more and our world is slowly dissipating. Humans need to take up their God-given role in taking care of Earth instead of using it all up and dumping the waste somewhere to rot.

Caroline R. said...

I never really thought about how the actual nature of the planet was effected by the fall. I thought that was very interesting. I mean we've always heard how factories and other man-made issues are hurting the planet, but never how the action of the fall effected life outside our own. I suppose that's quite selfish, but not at all surprising. I wonder if the fall had never happened if everything would be evergreen...no dead plants in the winter...hmmm. Anyway, I thought that was a cool concept that is rarely explored.

Too often I hear people make excuses for their sins, saying, "Well, someone will do it if I don't, so I might as well..." For example, littering. There is so much trash on the side of roads and highways that people think it is ok to throw out more trash. But really, it is not ok to throw out more trash. This is because the trash accumulates and people who do trash services have to pick it up. Would the person who threw the trash out want to do this service? I don't think so. God put people in charge of the Earth to take care of it and keep it growing, not trash it and turn it into a wasteland. When God has given us the Earth as a gift and asked us to watch over it, that is what we should do. Just like God watches over us. Sin is created when one creates it. So next time that person goes to throw trash out of their window, they should think about how their action will affect everything and everyone around them, and take responsibility for their own actions.

Definitely true what Joel said. I also feel, because humans constantly sin, that it is our obligation to love and honor God in any way possible. Respecting His creation is just one of the many ways how we can honor Him. So, it would be nice to plant a tree, pick up some trash, or water your grandma’s plants, because that’s respecting God's wonderful creation! Yay God! Wheeeeeeee!

Joel states the truth in here! I think this is a good way of living but as humans we abuse a lot of things. We always want more and there is nothing we can do to stop it. We are lucky to live on this Earth but we are all sinners so we can't do much to help.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Joel's comments on man's place between God and creation. God created the earth to be beautiful so when we abuse it we are hurting Him and His work. People need to stop putting themselves first and consider the consequences of their actions. Whether or not we abuse the environment affects others now and in the future.

With the idea of human supremacy, we tend to take advantage of creation. We began to use creation (trees, water, oil, etc.) to make things easier and faster for us. In the past few years, there have been more attempts to protect the environment (technology going green). I think this is a step in the right direction to protect what God has created until He restores the Earth. God granted us this Earth to live on, and we should act as stewards for it.

I have never given how man treats nature much thought until now. However, those two categories sum up human's perception of nature pretty well. However, there are people in between. I think a vast majority of people are in between. Unfortunately, only the extremists are that outspoken making the everyone in between pale in comparison. Nature should be taken care of, but not to a point of worship.

I would have to say that I agree with Joel. Sin and wanting more power over things has taken over people. People truly need to see God's glory and that he is all powerful. God gave us life to have a purpose, but if we don't do what God wants then nothing will happen and God won't approve. People need to realize that having power isn't as great or amazing as God's glory.

I think this notion applies to today's society more than ever. We're constantly hearing about all these new, go-green products, which will help better the destruction we have caused. All the damages are discussed more now, then they ever were, for everyone is aware of the fact that we are ruining our planet. However, pride plays an even bigger role in humans today, than it did in the past. It's this pride that keeps humans from pursuing better things for our planet. When we can put our pride aside, we will be able to take care of our surroundings the way God intended.

It is our responsibilty as the people of earth not only to take care of it but to appreciate what we have. While God put us here with the intention that we enjoy ourselves, he also left us responsibilities. Responsibilities that only some have the morals to carry out.

God made man in his own image and he gave us instructions to take care of the world. If we are truly God's people, we will do what he said for us to do because he would not just leave us to be destroyed by some other, greater being/force. God takes care of us, so we should in turn take care of what he gave us in the environment.

I agree with everyone...God put us down on earth to tend to his creations. God calls on us to take care the earth. As the years pass humanity becomes less and less concerned with what God has blessed us with. We need to take the time to stop and reverse this problem before it's too late.

Ellen C. Jones said...

In society today, we all take advantage of everything that is given to us. We abuse the things the Lord has blessed us with. We honestly do not deserve the grace he blesses us with. We should be thankful for what we are given and blessed with. God is good and therefore He will be a forgiving God and forgive us for all the things we take advantage of.

Human beings are created both in the image of God and to be the image of God in the life of the world. Which means that we are created by God, just like the earth and everything else was. We should take care of and love everything that God has blessed us with, and the earth is one of them. Not only were we made by God, but be represent his exisistence.

I pretty much agree with what everyone has been saying. God says we are meant to rule over the animals and His creation but with that not take advantage of what they have to offer. Today we take so much for granted and forget what God wanted us to do. We should be taking care of this planet and His creation instead of trying to destroy it.

from what i have read i would have to say that i agree with how God created the Earth and put man on Earth to take care of it. we are here to watch over the plants and animals and keep them living healthy. but if we are not careful our own wants and wishes will step in the way. instead of doing what God wants we will selfishly do what we want, which will in the end result in man killing the very planet that he lives on. the bottom line is that God's will should be our command

Anonymous said...

I def. agree with what Joel is saying. It is okay for us to think that we are of the highest power on earth. Such as over the animals or plants. But it is not okay for us to disrespect god's creation by thinking we can do whatever we want to it like it is our own property. We should not be taking advantage of what God has given us and enjoy the beauty of the earth. We need to take better care of our earth because even though God is the creator, we are the ones who have the responsibility and honor of preserving his creation.

i agree with most of this article. i think that man defiantly has rule over everything, then animals and plants. God put them here for us to use and enjoy but just like anything else, if we abuse a privilege it will often end up bad. so basically we should use what god gave us, but never abuse it.

We do not deserve the right to rule over all creations on earth. We can desire it all we want but we dont actually deserve it. When humans kind is restored is when we might be able to think about that. We cant even take care of the planet as it is now. God took the right to be like a god because we have to much pride and dont do what we are suppose to do. There is just to much sin in us to know what to do with power and knowledge like that. It wouldnt be good for us or the rest of the planet.
